The aircraft tail number 54-1986 was last assigned to the Iowa Air National Guard’s 185th Fighter Group in Day’s hometown of Sioux City, Iowa. Tail 986 was flown as part of the 37th Tactical Fighter Group at Phu Cat air base with the Iowa Air National Guard during the unit’s year-long deployment to Vietnam from 1968 to 1969.
