The visiting delegation of the 36th Infantry Division touring the eastern seaboard of Italy in remembrance of the 80th Anniversary of Operation Avalanche meet with a local Italian woman in Paestum, Italy, Sept. 9, 2023. The woman shared a photo and her story with the commanding general of the Arrowhead Division, Maj. Gen. Win Burkett, Division Command Sgt. Maj. Jose Escobedo, and visiting T-Patch Soldiers of her time as a child during the German occupation and the Arrowhead Soldiers who saved her. [Roughly translated from Italian to English by a family member] “I was four years old in this photo where my father there, [second right] and uncle there [far right] took this photo with the Soldiers who saved us when they came to Paestum. The city was not here anymore. German’s bombed it to stop the Americans who came from the beach. But we stayed with the Americans who saved us and took us in, to help them until we could be moved to a safe [liberated] place. My father and uncle would cook for them, and I would run messages between camps and teach them songs I knew. I show this picture to everyone who will look so they will know about my family and the Americans who saved me.” On Sept. 9, 1943, the Arrowhead Division landed on the beach in Paestum, Italy, marking the beginning of Operation Avalanche. Operation Avalanche was a series of military operations during World War II. The most famous and significant Operation Avalanche took place on September 9, 1943, when the Allied forces, primarily composed of American troops from Texas and British troops, landed on the Italian mainland as part of the larger Allied invasion of Italy. This operation was a crucial step in the campaign to liberate Italy from German occupation and advance further into Europe. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Christina Clardy)
