U.S. Army veteran, Max Gurney, right, bows his head during the invocation at the annual Mt. Soledad Veteran’s Day Ceremony, La Jolla, California, Nov. 11, 2023. Gurney served under U.S. Army Gen. George S. Patton during World War II. He also served in campaigns in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. Gurney is 102 years old and was the oldest veteran present. The mission of the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial is to serve as a beacon of freedom that reminds Americans and foreign visitors of the sacrifices our veterans have made since the founding of our nation.
