U.S. Army Lt. Col. Joel Machak, a logistician assigned to the 7th Infantry Division, and Lt. Col. Koishi Hiroshi, Machak’s counterpart with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, begin a sustainment brief by providing an overview of logistics, operations, bilateral coordination efforts, and sustainment strategies for the Yama Sakura exercise. As a part of U.S. Army Pacific's Operation Pathways, the 43rd iteration of Yama Sakura exercise, YS-85, is the first U.S. Army, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, and Australian Army command post exercise based in Japan. For over forty years, this exercise has demonstrated a continued commitment by both the United States and Japan to work together as dedicated allies in support of the U.S.-Japan security treaty and for continued peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
