Paul Schmidt, pilot assigned to 161st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Group, 8th Air Force, stands in front of his P-51 Mustang, the “Rocinante” – named after Don Quixote’s horse. On March 23, Schmidt was attacking an enemy train near Sendenhorst, Germany, in his F-6D, a reconnaissance version of the P-51 Mustang fighter, when he went missing in action at the age of 20.
