A ship model of the Arleigh-Burke class destroyer (DDG 51) runs through Carriage 1 in Carderock’s David Taylor Model Basin in West Bethesda, Md., on Aug. 31, 2023. The Additive Manufacturing feasibility study led by Carderock's Surface Ship Hydromechanics Division, with the support of the Naval Innovative Science and Engineering program, is evaluating the strength and integrity of AM models through typical stresses of a carriage test. Scientists and engineers will compare the results of a similar hull design manufactured from fiberglass material.
