NSA/CSS Hawaii's (NSAH) celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month culminated with an all-out, local-style luau — or grand Hawaiian feast — on the Rochefort Campus front lawn. Maohi Nui performed songs, dances, and a fire knife demonstration from diverse Polynesian backgrounds, including Tahiti, Sāmoa, Aotearoa, and Hawai‘i. NSAH AAPI ohana (family) prepared all of the food and shared the art of cooking food inside of an imu — or underground oven — inviting the workforce to experience the imu preparation as a means of cultural education. The event capped a busy month for NSAH, which carried out a series of events in celebration of AAPI Month.
NSA/CSS Hawaii employees and friends prepare a traditional imu pit to cook kalua pork. Air is fed into the fire beneath the rocks.
