Servicemembers and staff of U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) attend an award ceremony for Sgt. Maj. John Smith, SETAF-AF current operations noncommissioned officer in charge, Feb. 1, 2024, Caserma Del Din, Vicenza, Italy. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for five years of exceptional service with SETAF-AF. Smith plans to retire to his home state of Ohio following this assignment. He enlisted in the Army nearly 40 years ago in 1985, serving both on active duty and in the reserve, including deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. Smith originally enlisted as an infantryman, and has also served as a civil affairs specialist and intelligence sergeant.
"Serving in SETAF-AF has been an honor and I could not have asked for a better assignment to finish my career," said Smith.
