    31st Marine Expeditionary Unit

U.S. Navy hospital corpsman second class Christopher Black with command element, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, performs a phlebotomy in a CH-53E Super Stallion during a mass casualty exercise, above Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan, Feb. 5, 2024. A phlebotomy is the process of puncturing a vein in the arm to draw blood. The exercise tests the responsiveness and coordination of a Marine Air-Ground Task Force to rescue and treat numerous casualties at once within an expeditionary advanced base of operations. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of the America Amphibious Ready Group in the 7th Fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
