The Navy and Marine Corps Force Health Protection Command (NMCFHPC) hosts a cake-cutting ceremony commemorating the Navy Medical Corps 153rd birthday, March 4, 2024, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia, building 3, on the 10th floor quarterdeck. During the ceremony, the oldest and youngest Medical Corps staff members cut the birthday cake with a U.S. Navy Officer saber.
The Medical Corps is comprised of more than 4,300 active-duty and reserve physicians, practicing in dozens of specialties and subspecialties around the world. Since the establishment of the Navy Medical Corps in 1871, Navy Medical Officers have served alongside Sailors and Marines who put themselves in harm’s way to defend the Constitution and protect our Nation.
In a letter address to the Medical Corps, Rear Adml. Guido F. Valdes director, Medical Corps; commander, Naval Medical Forces Pacific wrote, “The work you do, whether saving lives on the battlefield, providing care in hospitals and clinics, or conducting medical research, is vital to our warfighters, our Navy, and our nation.” (Navy photo by Desmond Martin)
