Core of the corps…with March designated as Women’s History Month in DoD, Naval Hospital Bremerton honors their staff who follow in the career path of such notable women as the first women to serve in the U.S. Navy - the ‘Sacred Twenty’ – nurses appointed after Congress established the Navy Nurse Corps on May 13, 1908. Soon after, Loretta Perfectus Walsh was the first woman to enlist in the U.S. Navy – March 17, 1917 – and the first woman to reach the rank of chief petty officer. Did you know? Andre Sobocinski, Navy Medicine historian affirms that there were more than 97,000 women who served in World War II. Fast forward to today: They are currently approximately 70,000 women in the Navy, with 30 percent of all hospital corpsmen – more than 8,000 - who are women, such as those shown here at NHB along with Dental Corps, Medical Corps, Medical Service Corps, Nurse Corps, Civilian Corps and Judge Advocate General Corps (Official Navy photo by Douglas H Stutz, NHB/NMRTC Bremerton public affairs officer).
