A Graphic Illustration of USNS Upshur (T-AP 198). Military Sealift Command's "MSC75 Blast from the Past" series honors the USNS Upshur which in 1962 evacuated 1,725 women, children and civilian employees from Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban missile crisis. Oct. 1, 2024, marks the 75th Anniversary of MSC. It was on this date in 1949 that RADM William M. Callaghan stood up Military Sea Transportation Service at the Main Navy and Munitions Building, Washington DC. For 75 years, MSC has provided agile logistics, strategic sealift and specialized missions to the Department of Defense.
