A U.S. Air Force C-130J Hercules aircraft, deploys flares during a sortie for the Advanced Tactics Aircrew Course, in Fort Huachuca, Arizona, March 12, 2024. In order to provide realistic threats for aircrews participating in exercises, equipment like Smokey SAMs, that simulate the launch of surface-to-air missiles, and UV-stimulators, that replicate the UV radiation profile of an approaching missile, are used to allow aircrews to learn and employ defensive tactics in a training environment. Since 1983 the Advanced Airlift Tactics Training Center has provided advanced tactical training to mobility aircrews from the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve Command, Air Mobility Command, Air Combat Command, Air Force Special Operations Command, United States Marine Corps, and 16 allied nations.
