The POLARIS A1 test vehicle was developed, designed, and tested by the Special Projects Office (SPO) now called Strategic Systems Programs (SSP). SSP is the Navy command that owns the cradle to grave responsibility for the submarine-launched ballistic missile system and oversees all aspects of research, development, production, logistics, storage, repair, and operational support for the strategic weapon system.
