U.S. Air Force Maj. Joel Hughes, molecular director of the Defense Health Agency Genetics Reference Laboratory, and Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson tour the only germline clinical genetics laboratories in the Department of Defense located at Keesler Medical Center, April 16. Hughes highlighted how this specialized laboratory provides local employment opportunities to Mississippi by concentrating molecular technologist talent in the coastal region. DHA-GRL also provides cost savings to the enterprise and improves access to expensive genetic testing for beneficiaries worldwide. Such examples include pharmacogenomic testing, hereditary cancer predisposition, cardiomyopathy gene panels, non-invasive prenatal testing, and more. In the end, Hughes emphasized how the security of genomic data is paramount to the mission of this laboratory and, in addition to the cost savings and mission readiness impacts, rates the highest on the list of priorities for the DHA-GRL.
