U.S. Air Force pilots wore the CSU-3/P counter pressure garment over their flight suit to prevent them from blacking out when maneuvering their aircraft. Abrupt turns can push blood inside the pilot’s body toward the legs causing him to temporarily lose consciousness. During the maneuver, the suit would inflate around the legs to keep blood in the upper body. These garments were developed for supersonic fighter jets in the mid 1950’s.
