    Know Your Defender - Brig. Gen. Christopher Samulski

    Meet Brig. Gen. Christopher Samulski, the deputy commanding general for operations, 29th Infantry Division. Samulski was deployed to the Drawsko Combat Training Center, Poland, in support of Immediate Response 24, May 08, 2024.

    Samulski has the support of his wife and two teenage kids. He has been on numerous deployments during his long military career and each tour brings important opportunities. This particular deployment is unique to Samulski because this country carries the native history of his Polish last name and heritage.

    “It’s always good when you get to operate with Allies,” the deputy commanding general said. “You get an appreciation for the various ways of doing things.”

    Samulski hopes his Soldiers appreciate getting to see a part of the world they may not have been to before. He hopes they understand the level of complexity of operating with Allies and partners.

    “They get to see a really complex operation like the Wet Gap Crossing, which a division is responsible for command and controlling,” explained Samulski. “To actually see it occur is pretty remarkable.”

    The 29th ID engaged in multiple operations throughout Immediate Response 24.

    “As the Army looks to maximize readiness for divisions, you’ll see more divisions involved in external exercises,” said Samulski.

    DEFENDER is a Dynamic Employment of Forces to Europe for NATO Deterrence and Enhanced Readiness, and is a U.S. European Command scheduled, U.S. Army Europe and Africa conducted exercise that consists of Saber Strike, Immediate Response, and Swift Response. DEFENDER 24 is linked to NATO’s Steadfast Defender exercise, and DoD’s Large Scale Global Exercise, taking place from 28 March to 31 May. DEFENDER 24 is the largest U.S. Army exercise in Europe and includes more than 17,000 U.S. and 23,000 multinational service members from more than 20 Allied and partner nations, including Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
