For Interior Communications Electrician 1st Class Anh Lai, recognizing May as designated by the Department of Defense as Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month provides special significance in commemorating the vital - and vibrant - contributions and diversity which Asian Americans, native Hawaiians and Pacific islanders have brought to the nation and to the U.S. Navy.
"My parents are from Vietnam. Culture to me is a way of life that has been passed down generation after generation. It's in the food, the traditional outfits, the ceremonies, the music...everything," shared Lai.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, approximately six out of every 100 servicemembers are of Asian American or Pacific islander heritage (Official Navy photo/graphic by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Jenifer Benedict, NHB/NMRTC Bremerton public affairs office)
