Know Your Defender Sgt. Cole Loveberry

Meet U.S. Army Sgt. Cole Loveberry, a medic with 710th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division located at Fort Johnson, Louisiana.

The Jackson, Michigan native is currently supporting the Immediate Response 24 exercise as a bed team leader in the Role 2 field medical facility in Rovajärvi, Finland. Role 2 refers to the capabilities of the medical facility. These facilities provide advanced trauma management and emergency medical treatment including limited x-ray, laboratory and dental support.

Loveberry has spent his six years in the military as a medic and appreciates working and training alongside our Finnish allies.

“Learning what each other’s capabilities are and getting to see what we both know and what we both don’t know and learning from each other,” said Loveberry. “I love working with the Soldiers. I love being able to mentor the Soldiers and give them the mentorship I did have and the mentorship I wish I had growing up in the Army. ”

Loveberry was part of the 400 10th Mountain Division Soldiers who participated in the 550-mile road trip across Norway, Sweden and Finland - the first large-scale Army maneuver through Europe in decades.

“During this training, my biggest takeaway has been just talking to our allied partners, he said. “Whether it was the Norwegians as we drove through Norway or the Finnish soldiers here.”

As part of the exercise the U.S. Role 2 facility is stationed right next to the Finnish Role 1 medical facility, allowing both teams to integrate into each other’s operations during the Northern Forest, a national exercise of the Finnish Defence Forces, which is nested in the Defender 24 exercise.

DEFENDER is the Dynamic Employment of Forces to Europe for NATO Deterrence and Enhanced Readiness, and is a U.S. European Command scheduled, U.S. Army Europe and Africa conducted exercise that consists of Saber Strike, Immediate Response, and Swift Response. DEFENDER 24 is linked to NATO’s Steadfast Defender exercise, and DoD’s Large Scale Global Exercise, taking place from 28 March to 31 May. DEFENDER 24 is the largest U.S. Army exercise in Europe and includes more than 17,000 U.S. and 23,000 multinational service members from more than 20 Allied and partner nations, including Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
