From the February 18, 1949 Service to the Fleet, John L Conley was sandblasting the side of a cruiser in Dry Dock 1 when a rock bounced off the hull and struck his safety goggles. While he did require treatment for a shard of glass in his eye from the shattered lens, he was able to return to work and finish the day. Without the goggles, he may have lost his eye.
