The U.S. Navy launches the 40th C-3 Poseidon missile from the USS Nathanael Greene (SSBN 636) at 11 a.m. on Nov. 4, 1971, during Demonstration and Shakedown Operation 15. This was this first surface launch of a Poseidon missile from an SSBN. The C-3 was a two-stage, solid-propellant missile capable being launched from a submerged submarine. The U.S. Navy maintained the C-3 Poseidon missiles until the last one was offloaded in September 1992.
