This digital art graphic illustration celebrates the 101st anniversary of the U.S. Air Force air refueling capabilities. The first successful aerial refueling took place on June 27, 1923, when a DH-4B carrying 1st Lt. Virgil Hine and 1st Lt. Frank W. Seifer passed gasoline through a dangling gravity hose to another DH-4B flying beneath it carrying Lieutenants Lowell H. Smith and John P. Richter, a feat that unleashed the nation's air power potential. Today the 6th Air Refueling Wing continues to fuel the fight and enables unrivaled global reach and rapid global mobility all over the world to partners and allies.
