In early May 2003, heavy rains led to flooding across southern Ethiopia that displaced tens of thousands of people. Some of these floodwaters can be seen in this false-color image (bottom) acquired on May 6, 2003, by the modis.gsfc.nasa.gov Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Terra spacecraft.

During the dry season, hardly any water is visible in Ethiopia in MODIS imagery (top, acquired January 30, 2003). In this false-color image land is green and brown, water is blue and clouds are light blue and white.
