During the 2023 Rec Fest held at the National Great Rivers Museum in Alton, Illinois, students participated in a naming contest for several newly created islands on the Mississippi River. Throughout the year, park rangers delivered educational programming about work being done through the Upper Mississippi River Restoration Program to restore island habitat to 2,400 local middle school students after which students submitted their own choice of name for the new islands. A panel of local stakeholders selected the names Steamboat, Moonlight, Canvasback and Powrie from the entries.
