Two American White Pelicans swim in a pond in the Bonnet Carré Spillway in St. Charles Parish, La. The pair of pelicans received injuries to their wings from an unknown source in 2019, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, park rangers didn’t want to risk further injury by trying to catch them for treatment. Despite their injuries, the pelicans have been able to survive and provide for themselves without human intervention. USACE park rangers partner with other federal and state organizations in Louisiana to help rescue and care for injured or distressed fish and wildlife in their areas of responsibility.
