A U.S. Army map depicts the front lines between the Allies and German forces on Dec. 19, 1944, the third day of the battle of the Bulge. The inset shows the advance of German units as they encircled much of the U.S. Army’s 106th Infantry Division. The division’s 422nd and 423rd Infantry Regiments surrendered, and approximately 6,000 U.S. Soldiers were taken prisoner that day. (Maps from Library of Congress) (U.S. Army graphic by Thomas Ruyle)
