Inspired by the rescue hooks he used to carry in his kit as a U.S. Army Special Forces medical sergeant, Dr. Alexander Villahermosa, an Army neurosurgery resident at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, invented a device that would make it easier for neurosurgeons to cut the thin membrane lining the brain, called the dura, when performing brain surgery. This drawing shows Villahermosa’s initial concept for how the device, called the Delta Hook™, might look and work.
