Vice Adm. Alexander Lyle received the Medal of Honor as a lieutenant commander for his actions during World War I. Following the war, he would serve as chief of the dental service at Newport Naval Hospital in Rhode Island, chief of the Dental Corps, Inspector of Dental Activities for the Navy, General Inspector (Dental), and be the first Navy dentist to hold flag rank.
