The SR-71 Blackbird had its first flight in 1964 and would fly for the next 25 years, retiring in 1990. Designed by famed American aerospace engineer, Clarence ‘Kelly’ Johnson, and developed by Lockheed’s Skunk Works division, the Blackbird became an icon of the Cold War, flying higher and faster than any other aircraft – a benchmark that remains unbeaten 56 years after its first flight.
