Dr. Lance Chamberlain, a cognitive performance specialist with U.S. Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR) performs heart rate variability (HRV) training with breathwork on a U.S. soldier in Stuttgart, Germany, Dec. 19, 2023. HRV biofeedback training uses controlled breathing techniques and real-time feedback to improve arousal control and adaptiveness of the autonomic nervous system. Cognitive performance is a key part of total readiness for Special Operations Forces service members. This enables SOCEUR troops to perform at their peak ability in order to achieve the mission of working with Allies and partners to counter malign influence, build interoperability, rapidly respond to emerging threats and if necessary, defeat aggression on the European continent.
