Following Hurricane Francine’s landfall this past week USACE crews assessed the impact of the storm to Grand Isle. The storm effects were limited to the western most two miles of the project. The majority of damages were to the beach which will likely require additional sand to bring the beach back to design elevation/section. Despite the recent loss of material along the recently constructed beach resulting from Hurricane Francine, the large majority of newly construction beach remains intact.
Sand stockpiles placed along the beach for utilization during final grading showed signs of moderate erosion. There was minimal impact to the recently constructed dune and cores. Prior to the storm event, gap closures were put in place to shield the degraded sections of dune where dune core installation was ongoing. The gap closures appeared fully intact and successful in preventing surge from penetrating the dune alignment. Damages to the existing breakwaters and western jetty were not evident.
