The U.S. Navy launches an A3TA Polaris missile from the submerged USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN 601 - Blue) at 12:33 p.m. on Nov. 20, 1978, during Demonstration and Shakedown Operation 85 (DASO-83). The Polaris A3 included significantly more advancements than A2 did over the A1 model. In fact, the A3 was about an 85 percent new design.
