The U.S. Navy launches its second Trident C-4 missile from the submerged USS Francis Scott Key (SSBN 657) during Program Evaluation Missile - 2 mission on June 8, 1979, off the East Coast of Florida. The Trident I was a three-stage, solid-propellant, inertially guided, submarine-launched fleet ballistic missile. It boasted a greater range and payload than its predecessors.
