HONOLULU (September 27, 2024) – USS Antietam (CG 54) quartermasters spent several days designing and painting a display showing all Command Excellence awards earned throughout the ship’s career so former crew members attending the ship's September 27 decommissioning ceremony could see their contributions. Commissioned in Baltimore, Maryland on May 22, 1987, Antietam completes its service after 37 years. Modern U.S. Navy guided-missile cruisers perform multiple mission including Air Warfare (AW), Undersea Warfare (USW), Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS) and Surface Warfare (SUW) surface combatants capable of supporting carrier battle groups, amphibious forces or operating independently and as flagships of surface action groups.
