U.S. Army soldiers assigned to Alpha “Hotsteel” Battery, 1st Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, execute a fire mission during exercise Flaming Thunder at Camp Herkus, Lithuania, Sept. 25, 2024. As an artillery tradition of the first shot fired in country for this Paladin crew, they shot from outside of the vehicle with a 50 foot cord referred to as “pulling the tail.” The 1st Cavalry Division’s mission is to engage in multinational training and exercises across the continent, strengthening interoperability with NATO allies and regional security partners, which provides competent and ready forces to V Corps, America’s forward-deployed corps in Europe.
