Larry Carlile, biologist and chief of the Fish and Wildlife Branch of the Fort Stewart Directorate of Public Works, watches as alligators swim across Pineview Lake on Fort Stewart, Georgia, Sept. 18, 2024. To protect Soldiers’ ability to train, Carlile’s responsibilities include managing the installation’s Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration Program, which works to reduce incompatible development on the boundaries of the base. The Army works with local and national non-profit partners and the state of Georgia to protect rural lands surrounding the training base, preventing the noise, dust and smoke from training and land management activities from negatively impacting surrounding communities.
