U.S. Army Soldiers from the Det. 1, 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment, 59th Aviation Troop Command, South Carolina Army National Guard, fly relief missions across the South-North Carolinas border, aboard a CH-47F Chinook helicopter, during post Hurricane Helene response operations, Western North Carolina, Oct. 2, 2024. The missions are flown daily from Greenville, South Carolina, as part of a multi-state, relief effort to provide aid to communities that have become isolated in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Helene made landfall on Sept. 26, in Florida, as a category 4 hurricane. The storm caused historical-level floodings in western North Carolina and power outages affecting over 1.2 million people in South Carolina, and over 3 million across Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. 162 people have perished, and hundreds are still missing. The South Carolina National Guard continues to respond to disaster relief requests for assistance from federal, local, and state agencies.
