With a unit coin in his hand, U.S. Marine Maj. Gen. Christopher S. Owens, commanding general of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, shakes the hand of U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Tyler Lester, an assaultman gunner with Weapons Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Feb. 15 during his visit to Ban Chan Krem, Kingdom of Thailand, during exercise Cobra Gold 2013. Lester was recognized for his exemplary military occupational specialty proficiency after he successfully shot and hit three targets with his shoulder-launched multipurpose assault weapon, commonly referred to as a SMAW. The shots were fired during a company-level attack range conducted alongside Royal Thai Marines. CG 13, in its 32nd iteration, is an annual Thai-U.S. co-sponsored exercise, which focuses on maintaining readiness, and enhancing international partnerships and regional security in the Asia-Pacific region. 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines is attached to 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force.
