Workers test-fit the launch mechanism base frame for an Over-the-Horizon (OTH) Weapon System aboard USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) in San Diego on May 14. (Photo provided by Todd Jenkins)
Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division and its partners installed the system — the first OTH on a U.S. Navy destroyer — in time for it to launch a Naval Strike Missile on July 18 during the Rim of the Pacific exercise in Hawaii. The work done on USS Fitzgerald will help inform the way forward on providing this capability to other DDGs.
