NORFOLK, Va. (October 18, 2024) In a rare occurrence all five ships of a destroyer squadron are moored together pier side at Naval Station Norfolk, October 18, 2024. The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Mitscher (DDG 57), USS Mahan (DDG 72), USS Bainbridge (DDG 96), USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98) and USS Winston Churchill (DDG 81) (not pictured) make up Destroyer Squadron Two, which is attached to Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 12. USS Gerald R. Ford, the flagship of the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, is currently preparing to be underway in the U.S. 2nd Fleet area of operations to conduct Surface Warfare Advanced Tactical Training (SWATT). SWATT is the surface force’s premiere advanced tactical training exercise that increases war-fighting capability and tactical proficiency across all domains.
