An F-35B Lightning II sits on the flight deck of Japan’s Izumo-class multi-functional destroyer JS Kaga (DDH 184) before a morning flight period Oct. 22, 2024, while the ship is in the Pacific Ocean for developmental test. The short takeoff and vertical landing variant aircraft and a flight test team from the F-35 Patuxent River Integrated Test Force, along with Sailors and Marines from U.S. Third Fleet, are aboard to certify that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s largest ship’s modifications will support STOVL operations. Data that testers gather during these sea trials will be analyzed and eventually inform recommendations to enhance the capabilities of the MSDF. The F-35 Joint Program Office, to which Pax ITF reports, continues to develop, produce, and sustain the F-35 Air System to fulfill its mandate to deliver a capable, available, and affordable air system with fifth-generation capabilities.
