    Retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. The birthday pageant is an annual tradition that includes the uniform pageant, as well as the traditional cake cutting ceremony in honor of the Marine Corps’ birthday.

    Newton enlisted in the Marine Corps on August 3, 1943 and was later discharged in 1946. He was then recalled in 1951 and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant to serve in the Korean War. Newton had completed college after his initial discharge and commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in 1951 before being sent to Korea. Newton retired on April 1, 1972 as a Colonel. During his time in the Marine Corps, Newton served in the American Theatre World War II from 1943-1944, Pacific Theatre World War II from 1944-1946, the Korean War from 1953-1954, and the Vietnam War in 1965.
