Participants write down ideas during one of the first breakout sessions of the third annual One Health Symposium at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD, November 22, 2024. The breakout session, led by Dr. Katrina Lohan, head of the Coastal Disease Ecology Laboratory, SERC, and U.S. Army Maj. Thierry Fouapon, Associate Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and the One Health Branch, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), facilitated discussions between participants on antimicrobial resistance and wastewater surveillance. The One Health Symposium celebrates the 60-year partnership between WRAIR and the Smithsonian Institution (SI), and fosters discussions and collaboration between researchers and scientist from different organizations. The symposium was attended by professionals from WRAIR, SI, and several other government science organizations. The event created connections between researchers and celebrated the One Health initiative, which is a collaborative approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of human health, animal health, and the environment, with the ultimate goal of achieving Soldier readiness and enhancing global health security.
