Dr. Matthew Conte, principal investigator of the Viral Disease Branch’s Viral Genomics and Bioinformatics section, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), shares ideas during one of the first breakout sessions of the third annual One Health Symposium at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD, November 22, 2024. The breakout session, led by Dr. Pierre Comizzoli, Senior Program Officer at the Office of the Under Secretary for Science and Research, Smithsonian Institution (SI), and U.S. Army Lt. Col. Dawn Hull, Director of the One Health Branch, WRAIR, facilitated discussions between participants on ecology and zoonotic diseases. The One Health Symposium celebrates the 60-year partnership between WRAIR and the SI, and fosters discussions and collaboration between researchers and scientist from different organizations. The symposium was attended by professionals from WRAIR, SI, and several other government science organizations. The event created connections between researchers and celebrated the One Health initiative, which is a collaborative approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of human health, animal health, and the environment, with the ultimate goal of achieving Soldier readiness and enhancing global health security.
