Dr. Brian Bourke, National Research Council research associate, Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit, speaks to U.S. Army Lt. Col. Dawn Hull, Director of the One Health Branch, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), about a poster he contributed to during the third annual One Health Symposium at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD, November 22, 2024. Dr. Bourke’s poster, entitled “Viral Pathogen Detection in U.S. Game-farm Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) Flags Spillover Risk to Wild Flocks,” was one of ten posters presented during the One Health Symposium. The One Health Symposium celebrates the 60-year partnership between WRAIR and the Smithsonian Institution (SI), and fosters discussions and collaboration between researchers and scientist from different organizations. The symposium was attended by professionals from WRAIR, SI, and several other government science organizations. The event created connections between researchers and celebrated the One Health initiative, which is a collaborative approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of human health, animal health, and the environment, with the ultimate goal of achieving Soldier readiness and enhancing global health security.
