Dr. Timothy Sands, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University president, speaks to his audience of university and government officials prior to accepting the Jack Donnelly Award for Excellence in Counterintelligence from David Cattler, Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA) director, at a ceremony held in Blacksburg, Va., on Nov. 22.

“Education is the core of our counterintelligence mission, and our program facilitates briefings and meetings alongside our government partners, including DCSA, the FBI, and NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service), who are represented here today,” said Sands. “We are humbled and honored that, out of roughly 12,500 eligible organizations, we are one of five recipients this year of the DCSA Jack Donnelly Award recognizing excellence in counterintelligence. This is the fourth time we have received a DSCA award, and that is a testament to the hard work of those who have built this program into a best-in-class operation. We greatly appreciate the DSCA’s recognition of our industrial security and counterintelligence programs over the years.”

The award - presented only to entities cleared by the federal government to deter, detect and disrupt the theft of classified information - recognized Virginia Tech for being a national leader in counterintelligence.

The ceremony also featured remarks by Cattler and U.S. Mark Warner left to right at the table, regarding the university's counterintelligence accomplishments impacting Virginia Tech’s operations, investigations, cybersecurity, collaboration, community outreach, threat Integration, training and awareness, and leadership.
