A local Lao worker poses for a photo during a recovery mission in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Oct. 29, 2024. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency’s humanitarian mission has a significant role in the Department of Defense’s efforts to build partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region and around the world. Each recovery mission lasts between 30-45 days per operation, and it involves a variety of Department of Defense specialty occupations to ensure the mission is successful. There are currently 1,574 missing and unaccounted-for Americans from the Vietnam War. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Megan Ozaki)
