U.S. Army Air Corps 1st Lt. Charlie Wilson, left, and 1st Lt. Billy Bittle, both 350th Bomb Squadron B-17 Flying Fortress pilots, pose for a photo with a B-17 assigned to the 100th Bomb Group at Thorpe Abbotts, Norfolk, England, in 1943. Wilson began his flying career with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a sergeant-pilot before transferring over to the USAAC and gaining his commission. He flew 32 combat missions, along with Operation Chowhound missions, air dropping food supplies to the Dutch population, and repatriating prisoners of war and French underground personnel from captivity in Austria to France in 1945.
