Wind shear blows snow atop the summit of Mt. Gordon Lyon as a waxing gibbous moon rises over a deactivated Nike Hercules missile site on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Dec. 9, 2024. Activated in 1959 and maintained by Soldiers until 1979, Site Summit is located 4,000 feet up at the top of Mt. Gordon Lyon, and was a part of the ‘Rings of Steel’ missile defense system that protected major cities around the U.S. using the Nike Hercules surface-to-air missiles.
