U.S. Marine Corps Drill Instructors, Staff Sgt. Burruel Delacruz, back left, and Staff Sgt. Barry Clayton, front left, both with Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, are presented a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California, Dec. 13, 2024. A NAM is given to members of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps for meritorious service or achievement. Delacruz and Clayton received a NAM for exemplifying unrivaled courage and extraordinary presence of mind when confronting a life-threatening emergency. The words “drill instructor, drill instructor, drill instructor” were called and Delacruz and Clayton sprang into action to save a fourteen-month-old infant who was unconscious and not breathing. Providing CPR and proper throat sweeping techniques they successfully dislodged the obstruction and the infant regained consciousness. Likely saving baby Aisla’s life. The family of the infant was onsite during the ceremony and presented the awards. The Marine Corps has served the Nation honorably for 250 years. Marines embody the uncompromising standards and characteristics of honor, courage and commitment.
